How to say ‘Love is love’ in Chinese language

The phrase ‘Love is love’ is actually just like its literal meaning, just love is love. But in many parts of the world, LGBTQ+ peoples are not accepted or recognized for various reasons, so gradually the phrase ‘Love is love’ Be a slogan of the LGBTQ+ community.

How does LGBTQ+ peoples who live in the Chinese language world, or grow up and live in Asia under the influence of Confucian culture, express Love is love?

囍 Double Happiness

The direct translation of ‘Love’ in Chinese is the word ‘爱’, but I think there is another word that is more suitable to express this ‘love’ in English, and this word is “囍”. “” is a combination of two “喜” characters, which means ‘Double Happiness‘, happiness is added happiness, and double happiness is coming. The Chinese character “囍” has always been regarded as a graphic symbol of marriage between men and women in the Chinese world or in the Chinese community.

However, if LGBTQ+ people living in the Asian Confucian cultural background get married, it is not a marriage of “male” and “female” in the traditional sense, but may be Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender. The Chinese language world should also expand the cultural connotation of the word “囍”, which can not only be a graphic symbol of marriage between men and women, but also a pride symbol of LGBTQ+ marriage, and a symbol of Equity & Inclusion.

In 2016 Lin-Manuel Miranda recited a poem at the Tony Awards where he cried “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside. Now fill the world with music , love, and pride”. In the Chinese world, how we respond to Lin-Manuel Miranda with Chinese characters, I think it should be “囍囍囍” that can be repeated.

The rainbow flag is the iconic flag of LGBTQ+ and it consists of 6 different colors. In the upcoming pride month 2022, we want to create a new pride symbol belonging to the Chinese language world LGBTQ+ community.
